Summer's gone

Been quiet for a while...hope your summer was enjoyable.

I personally experienced the loss of my best friend Chotchke over the Labor Day weekend. Most of you knew her as the "Queen" of the run. She lived a good long life and was about 15-1/2 to 16 yrs. old (don't know for sure...adopted her when she was about 2). It was tough at the end and life will be very different without her. I don't plan on getting another dog while living in the city. Since I will not be visiting the run on a daily basis, I feel that my duties as President of the run should be passed on to someone else who will have involvement and awareness of what is going on and what needs to be done. I will be available for advisement and help as the need arises, but my hands on will be greatly diminished. I will continue to visit the run since many of you have become good friends over the years and at the same time, I can enjoy dogs at play.

If any of you would like to take on the responsibility of President, I would like to talk to you. Please write me at trpdogrun@yahoo.com as soon as possible.

Thanks to everyone for your support.

We were expecting to have the entire run covered with zeolite this past week, but somehow the work order was changed to only deliver one truck load. There may be a couple of loads left in the Parks Dept. inventory, but I don't know when we will get them. Then we will have to consider purchasing the balance needed to complete the project.

Come on down to the run this Sat., Aug.1st at 9AM to pitch in to help in our clean up day. The weatherman promises us a great day free of rain! Our objectives will be to spread out the new delivery of zeolite and general maintenance of the pea gravel. We have to pull back some of the gravel from the perimeter back towards the center of the run. Also, we have to smooth over the deep ruts left by the tractor the other day.

Since there has been a concensus that the addition of zeolite has been a major plus, I have contacted the Parks Dept. requesting that the entire run (including the small run) be covered. I have not received word yet when it will be delivered, but when it is, we will need some volunteers to help spread it out around the perimeter and in the small run where the tractor can't operate. So have your old jeans and sneakers ready to go.

Reminder: The run is open daily 7A to 10P. No dogs off leash outside the run in TRP (including the lawns) at anytime. Please vacate the run at 10P and do not enter if the gates haven't been locked. We must play by the rules that the Parks Dept. and Community Board 7 established and were agreed to some years ago in order to have the run where it is. Don't jeopordize our use of the property.

There was a recent advisory put out about fake flea & tick meds. Here's the info:

What action is EPA announcing?

EPA, in cooperation with its state and regional regulatory partners, is announcing the issuance of stop sale, use, and removal orders to retailers and other distributors of certain counterfeit pesticide products for control of fleas and ticks on dogs and cats. The stop sale, use, and removal orders are intended to disrupt an effort to distribute counterfeit pet pesticides. The counterfeit pesticides appear to have been unlawfully imported and were packaged in cartons designed to look like legitimately registered pesticides available in the U.S. under the trade names " Advantage " and " Frontline. " The orders prohibit retailers and other distributors from distributing or selling the counterfeit pesticide products and require their proper disposal.

http://wcbstv. com/seenat11/ fleas.ticks. epa.2.1095488. html

http://www.epa. gov/pesticides/ factsheets/ petproduct. htm

What products are affected by this action?

The following are brand names and EPA registration numbers of legitimate products. The counterfeit products may use these same names and numbers.

o Frontline Top Spot for Cats (EPA Reg. No. 65331-2)

o Frontline Top Spot for Dogs (EPA Reg. No. 65331-3)

o Frontline Plus for Cats (EPA Reg. No. 65331-4)

o Frontline Plus for Dogs (EPA Reg. No. 65331-5) I have this but it pass the legitimate product test READ BELOW or call MERIAL at 1800-660-1842 I did. - Billy

o Advantage 10 for Dogs (EPA Reg. No. 11556-117)

o Advantage 20 for Dogs (EPA Reg. No. 11556-119)

o Advantage 55 for Dogs (EPA Reg. No. 11556-120)

o Advantage 100 for Dogs (EPA Reg. No. 11556-122)

o Advantage 9 for Cats (EPA Reg. No. 11556-116)

o Advantage 18 for Cats (EPA Reg. No. 11556-118)

How can I determine if I have purchased the legitimate products?

The pesticide products are sold in a carton. It is difficult to distinguish counterfeit products from EPA-registered products because they look very much alike. To determine if the product you have purchased is legitimate, check to see if it meets the following criteria. If the product fails any one of these criteria, it most likely is an illegitimate product and should be disposed of properly.

Frontline products

The lot number on the retail carton matches the lot number on the applicator package and/or the individual applicators.

The instruction leaflet is included. It provides the following information: first-aid statements, including emergency U.S. telephone numbers; precautionary statements for humans and pets; directions for use; and storage and disposal statements.

The pesticide is contained in an applicator package, which is child-resistant. The directions for opening the child- resistant applicator package include an illustration that actually looks like the applicator package. The directions include " To remove applicator, use scissors or lift and remove plastic tab to expose foil, then pull down. "

The legitimate applicator package looks like this; note the notch between the individual applicator packages, which generally are absent on counterfeit products. Text on the package is in English only.

Once you open the applicator package, each individual applicator has a label that includes the registrant's name " Merial; " the product name; the EPA registration number (see list above); the net contents in fluid ounces (fl. oz.) (not in metric measure, i.e., ml); percentage (%) of active ingredient(s) (fipronil for Frontline Top Spot products; and fipronil and (S)-methoprene for Frontline Plus products); and the statements " CAUTION, " " Keep out of reach of children, " and " See full label for additional directions. " Text is in English only.

The applicator label for the dog products includes the size of the dog in pounds on which the product is to be used.

Advantage products

The only way to determine a legitimate Advantage product from a counterfeit product is by examining the actual applicator tubes that are inside the carton. Since the directions for use on the retail carton (outer box) and instruction leaflet of the legitimate product and the counterfeit product are identical, check the language that is printed on the applicator tubes. The legitimate Advantage products all contain applicator tubes that are printed in English. The most obvious sign of a counterfeit product is that the applicator tubes are printed in a foreign language (most likely French or German).

The legitimate applicator tubes include the EPA Registration Number, the signal word WARNING, and the child hazard warning (Keep Out of Reach of Children). Counterfeit applicator tubes may lack this information.

Legitimate applicator tubes will also include a reference statement that refers users to the main labeling for directions for use and will include the manufacturing company's name (Bayer). Counterfeit applicator tubes may lack this information.

Legitimate applicator tubes will contain an active ingredient statement that agrees with the active ingredient statement on the retail carton (9.1% imidacloprid) . A counterfeit product may have an active ingredient statement that differs (such as 10%).

Hope this was of value to you.

See you at the run.....

Hi fellow dog run users. I have created this blog until a new website can be established, or if this works out, just keep this as a means of communicating.

About two years ago, the run was in danger of being closed because of many complaints received by our community board from nearby residents and other users of Theodore Roosevelt Park.
I stepped forward to intercede since no one else was interested and tried to create a unified dog run group as required by the Parks Dept. Committees were established to accomplish a variety of positive things for the run, but unfortunately, those that volunteered (except for two people) did not follow thru due to personal life events and some things were left hanging such as fund raising and web site development. The Parks Dept. gave us the run, but it must be maintained by a volunteer group and self policed and funded for improvements.

There are many new faces and dogs using our run, and I am asking those individuals who would like to volunteer their time and talents to making the run a better place to contact me. Your input would be most welcome.

I would like to remind our dog run users of a few park rules which have been ignored lately. First of all, since TRP has a dog run, the park rule is that no off leash is allowed at any time outside of the run, even if the dog run is locked up. You are welcome to use Central Park in designated areas for off leash from 9P-1A and from daybreak to 9A. Secondly, there has been a rash of violaters using the surrounding lawns for a dog run, especially at night. No dogs are allowed on the lawns at any time. If any of you are caught by PEP (Parks Enforcement Police) breaking either of these rules, you will be subject to a fine that will cost you $100 or more. Please respect park property and the fences around the lawns....why do you think they were installed? A lot of money was spent on shrubs and flowers this year for the lawns and gardens. We do not need to look bad in the eyes of the community by having our dogs romp through them.

Look for the dog run clean-up day event that will be posted shortly. Grab a shovel or rake and participate. The pea gravel (what's left of it) needs to be redistributed throughout the run. You may have noticed the recent addition of zeolite which was provided by the Parks Dept. free of charge to help remedy the lingering "lake" situation. Since we had not raised funds in the past to buy material for a new surface, I found this to be the most practical solution to our problem. It has been given a "paw up" by our dogs and seems to have been well received by their owners as well.

If you want to be added to my e-mail list, and /or volunteer, please contact me at trpdogrun@yahoo.com. Please provide your name, e-mail address, phone # and name of your dog(s) and which breed type they are. The address for this blog can be found here on the web...
